Having Fun With Rednecks Lives
Way back in the 1800′s, poor southern whites who worked on farms, out in the fields and in the sun, were known as rednecks. The terminology was accepted, even though it was derogatory in nature. It was printed in newspapers as a way to rally the people together for meeting and voting purposes.
If you fast forward to present day, the name has taken a slightly different meaning. Whereas it used to refer to poor southern workers, it now is commonly used to describe people who live without a care towards how others view their lifestyle or to describe a person who still harbors racist beliefs. The description does not necessarily have anything to to with a particular job, but the way a person acts, speaks, dresses and lives.
The perfect example would be a young man whose first kiss was with his second cousin. He lives on his grandmother’s property in an old travel trailer that has aluminum foil in place of drapes. A deck surrounds the trailer and is used as his living room with a couch, television and recliner. Two old beer kegs and a piece of plywood serve as the coffee table and old Christmas lights are used to see at night. The lawn has never been mowed and he has three cars parked on the other side of the driveway, none of them run.
When it comes to entertainment, it is a wonder that the Redneck Olympics has not been developed. It would most likely include beer related completions such as; beer drinking, belching and the “biggest beer belly”. There would be a dirtiest overalls competition, junkiest car contest as well as spitting, farting and arm pit farting matches. The main event would encompass mud diving, mud wrestling and of course, derby cars.
Not all people find the term offensive, in fact, many people relish the thought of being categorized into a redneck. Other’s enjoy the novelty of throwing parties around the concept and even go so far at to decorate their homes for the occasion. Some family’s fit the bill so precisely, they have no clue anyone is referring the them.
You have to hand it to rednecks and the lifestyle they have made for themselves. If they do not have a pool, they line the back of the truck with plastic and fill it up with water. They turn couches into hammocks and aluminum siding into car door panels. Camouflage is a color and beer cans are crafted into decorations. They seem to grab life by the horns and don’t seem to care what their neighbor thinks of the toilet bowl full of tulips on the front lawn.
